미천한 신분으로 11살 때 소 한 마리와 자전거에 민며느리로 팔려간 폴란 데비는 남편의 학대를 견디다 못해 도망친다. 그러나 촌장 아들이 꾸민 음모에 휘말려 경찰에 끌려가 그곳에서 강간과 학대를 당한다. 경찰에서 풀려난 뒤 그녀는 갱단에 잡혀가 무리의 대장에게 상습적으로 강간당하는 처지가 되지만 이를 보다못한 도적 비크람이 대장을 사살하고 무리의 대장으로 올라서자 비크람에게 총 쏘는 법과 산을 오르는 극기훈련을 받으며 행복한 나날을 보낸다. 그러나 그것도 잠시 예전의 대장이었던 스리람이 돌아오면서 행복은 산산이 부서진다. 스리람은 버크람을 몰래 총살하고 폴란을 집단으로 윤간한 다음 발가벗긴 채로 마을로 끌고 다닌다. 가까스로 풀려난 폴란은 북부로 잠적해 갱단을 조직하고, 복수라도 하듯 2년여 동안 온갖 약탈과 학살을 일삼으며 경찰을 괴롭힌다.

In India, while the current government has control over all means of expression and puts artists and political opponents behind bars, satire is the only means left to address the social and political affairs of the country. “Behind Veils” is inspired by many true stories from rural India and attempts to highlight this political absurdity and women’s status in society in a satirical way.
